Thomas Alan Waites ( Pomona , California , 7 de diciembre de 1949), conocido como Tom Waits , es un músico, cantante, compositor y actor estadounidense conocido por sus canciones vanguardistas inspiradas en escritores como Charles Bukowski y algunos de la generación beatnik , especialmente Jack Kerouac . Tiene una voz distintiva que el crítico musical Daniel Durhholz describió como “como si Waits hubiera sido sumergido en una cuba de bourbon, fumado durante meses y luego sacado a la calle y aplastado por un coche”. Con su característico rugido vocal y la incorporación a sus canciones de música industrial y estilos musicales anteriores al rock como el blues, el jazz y el vodevil, Waites fue capaz de crear un personaje musical único. También ha trabajado como compositor de bandas sonoras y actor en películas como Under the Law. Drácula y The Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus, y fue nominado al Oscar por la banda sonora de la película One from the Heart.
